When the expansion and remodeling of the stadium took place for the stadium’s 50th anniversary the goal was to increase seating capacity by over 13,500 people as well as increase the amount of cover for seating. The expansion would make this stadium the third largest in the world.

In the year 2007 the building was set to expand yet again to include a maximum seating capacity of over 106,000 people. This restructuring of the stadium was estimated to cost €250 million but financial difficulties would postpone and eventually canceled the entire remodeling effort.
