The typical 3 p.m. check-in and 11 a.m. check-out are useful for hotels and resorts, but often not so great for guests. Fortunately, that’s changing.
Standard Hotels is introducing “Standard Time” (clever, right?) to allow guests to choose custom check-in and check-out times for a small additional fee (about 5% more). So instead of having to pack up and kill time until an afternoon flight, guests can select the option to stay at the property and enjoy the pool.
Amar Lalvani, managing partner of Standard International, calls strict times one of the “most inhospitable” parts of the hospitality business.
“You’re taking the red eye from Los Angeles to New York,” Lalvani offered as an example to Travel + Leisure. “You have a meeting that morning, and you get to the hotel and can’t even take a shower.”
Standard isn’t the first to recognize guests need flexibility: The Peninsula in Beverly Hills, Capella Hotels and Resorts, and the Ritz-Carlton in Charlotte, North Carolina have instituted similar policies.
“We think the element of time is very important,” Lalvani said. “The world is getting to be a busier and busier place, so how you use every hour of the day is very important to people.”
While to most guests the idea of choosing a different time to check in and out seems simple, the logistics behind the offering are anything but.
“There are a lot of things you have to do to make this work,” said Lalvani, “with housekeeping and minibars and all kinds of things.”
“Standard Time” is available at all the chain’s properties—two in New York, two in Los Angeles, and one in Miami.
