The Wallace Collection London, England

The Wallace collection is an open art gallery in London that can be found in Manchester Square housed within Hertford House. What makes the collection so unique is that most of the works are actually housed in the former townhouse of the Seymour family. There’s a wide range of various decorative arts and fine furnishings with examples that range from the 15th all the way up to the 19th century. With several examples of paintings from the old masters as well as arms and armor, furniture, porcelain, ceramics and more this private collection has been open to the public since the year 1900.

The first collection was established in the year 1897 as a private collection. When the original owner passed away and left the house and collection to his illegitimate son Sir Richard Wallace, Wallace’s widow declared that the entire house should be opened for the public.

Admission remains free but no object is able to leave the collection for loan exhibits. The only way to see many of these works of art is to visit the collection in person as the works of art rarely ever leave their positions. The only time of the works of art move our during restoration efforts.

The Wallace collection in London is very impressive with over 5500 pieces in the collection. Many 18th-century French paintings can be found within the walls including five Rembrandts and 19 Bouchers paintings.
